For serious cacti and succulent collectors, field numbers are important to help identify the origin of plants in their collection. The plant name will be suffixed with a number and these numbers can be correlated with a precise location in the wild. Strictly speaking, unless the plant is wild collected, or grown from wild collected seed, the number should be pre-fixed with “ex”. You can research field locations here
